Step by step guide, how to dye oats.
You will need
-Zip lock bags
-Put a cup of rolled oats into a zip lock bag.
-In a separate cup add 1.5 tablespoons of water and about 10 drops of food colouring.
-Add the water mixture to the oats in the bag, simply zip the bag and shake!
-Add a few more drops of colouring if you want it a little brighter.
I use a cup full of oats per bag and add a different colour to each bag. I have tried a couple of different ways of doing this and I found that mixing the water and food colouring together and then adding this too the oats gave a more even colour.
You do not want to add too much water and soak the oats but by adding 1.5 tablespoons to a cup full of oats seems to be enough to even out the colouring onto the oats. Any food colouring works fine.
-Empty the oats onto paper towels. Use your fingers to separate ones that have clumped together.
-Let them dry for a few hours or until your happy with them (I leave them to dry and put them back into the zip lock bags) there ideal for storing the oats.
- Arrange the oats how ever you like and let the children explore them
-Put the oats into a tub, box or on a tray for different kinds of play, you could even add animals, dinosaurs or building blocks to the oats
-Add scoops, tubs and spoons
-Watch as the children play for hours, oats are great for sensory play!
-Easy to sweep up after too!
**Always supervise children while there playing with the oats to avoid choking**
Encourage children not to eat the oats!
It does happen and oats are safe to eat but for this purpose they are for a play purpose.
